Hear about hiking Alta Via 1 in the Dolomites in northern Italy as amateur traveler talks with Morgan Fielder of CraveThePlanet.com about a multi-day hike he took more than once.
“My connection to the area is that it has become an annual family pilgrimage,” Morgan said. That’s why we meet up there every summer with kids and family friends from all over the world and take a five-day hut-to-hut hiking trip along the Dolomites on the Alta Via 1 route.”
Margan says the person who needs to do this is “someone who wants to ignite the miracle and just be in a place where the scenery is so gorgeous.” You forget even the existence of cars. But then, at the end of the night, you get a three-course dinner served with local wines from OMA cuisine in a family-run mountain lodge.
All of Alta Via 1 is 120km, but Morgan makes a shorter 5-day trip so that “my kids don’t hate me”. They spend a day in Cortina d’Ampezzo and then take a bus to Lago di Braies and then walk south again to Cortina d’Ampezzo.
Along the way, they stop at a series of mountain “huts” or shelters. These chalets provide a good to great meal and a comfortable place to sleep, allowing them to hike without a tent and with just a change of clothing.
Morgan describes the various medians, hiking segments and scenery of this beautiful part of Italy. It tells us where to meet the day hikers, when to go and what the weather will be like. Along the way, we learn a little about World War I when this rugged terrain was the front line between Italy and Austria-Hungary.
