Time to tick off my 172nd country – Oman! After exploring the beautiful city of Muscat, we headed to Sur where we stayed for 3 days and 2 nights. And in this city was our home Sur Plaza Hotel.

Located just 220 kilometers from the capital Muscat, Sur is known for its shipyards, which were vital to the city’s maritime past. Due to its location, Sur also became a very important city for sailors and traders, especially from East Africa and India. This is also why seeing large wooden ships in this city is not at all surprising!

Things to do in Sur, Oman

1. Wadi Shab

If you like hiking, this is a must! Wadi Shab is a very impressive landscape! You will walk slightly up the hill of the wadi over rocks and stones until you are standing in front of a clear, cool lake. It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes as the stones can be very sharp. If you’ve ever seen the arid landscape of Oman, it’s almost like something out of a fairy tale.

2. Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve

Amazing place but with lots of tourists. In the evening you can watch the laying of eggs and in the morning the digging and hatching of the turtles. Unfortunately, there is not much worth seeing in the vicinity.

3. Maritime Museum Sur

A visit to this small open-air museum is well worth it. It offers rewarding photo opportunities, especially the large dhow. You can then visit the nearby boatyard, which we highly recommend, to watch the craftsmen build or restore sailboats.

4. Visit the Castles

One of the best things to do in Sur is to visit its famous ancient monuments – castles! Here, learn more about this ancient Omani city and how history has shaped it into what it is today.

  • Bilad Sur Castle – This fully restored fort is located on the outskirts of Sur, in which several interior rooms have been prepared that can be visited. It is only about 200 years old and was intended as a defense against invading mountain/desert tribes.
  • Ras al Hadd Castle – A well-restored complex in the usual style of Ottoman fortresses just outside the bustling Sur is worth a visit. There is not much to see in the few accessible interior spaces, but the guides make up for it with their warm demeanor and local stories.
  • Al Sinaisilah Castle – Al Sinaisilah Castle in the center of Sur is a well-restored and maintained fortification. A few available rooms are labeled and partially lovingly decorated. There are also plenty of parking spaces, a toilet and a picnic area in the area.

Where to stay in Sur, Oman

We visited so many places in Muscat before going to Sur. Hosted by Mr. Mahesh and his team, Sur Plaza Hotel welcomed us with lots of gifts and surprises. We were spoiled! Ha-Ha!

At the Sur Plaza Hotel, our room was upgraded to an Executive King, which is really cool! It is equipped with a flat-screen satellite TV and free Wi-Fi. The modern decor also has a very relaxing effect on the eyes. Bed? Oh wow, I felt like I didn’t want to get out of bed anymore, but I wasn’t going to lose the chance to explore Oman, so it was a tough decision! Ha-Ha! For those on a budget, Sur Plaza Hotel also has a standard room.

Restaurant at the Sur Plaza Hotel

This is one of the main reasons why it is hard to leave Sur Plaza Hotel, restaurant! The hotel has 2 main restaurants – Oyster Restaurant and Al Najoom by the Pool Side.

Oyster restaurant

This restaurant overlooks the pool with stunning mountain views and is located in the hotel lobby. With the food they offer, it almost seems like we are on a tour around the world! Yes, they don’t just offer oysters, that’s what I thought too haha!. They have traditional Omani-Arabic, Continental, Chinese/Oriental and Asian buffet aa la carte. These delicious kitchens are enough to make me happy!

Restaurant schedule:
Breakfast – from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m
Lunch – 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m
Dinner – from 19:00 to 23:00

Captain Lounge Bar

If you want some booze while you’re at the hotel, go to the Captain Lounge bar, the drinks and food are great!

Food at Sur Plaza is one of the things you can look forward to when you stay here. I’m sure you’ll enjoy digging into all the delicious food in front of you in addition to your relaxing stay!

Another reason why you should spend your days at Hotel Sur Plaza is the excursions it offers. Guests can enjoy a dhow cruise in the natural coastal landscape of Ras Al Hadd. You will experience a one-hour cruise to discover the breathtaking places in Oman’s Sur.

Oops! That’s not enough, you can also have lunch or dinner on board during the cruise. If you like fishing, you can try it too! The dhow is fully furnished, so I’m sure you’ll have an unforgettable experience here (you can even celebrate your birthday on the cruise, yay!)

We only had a limited amount of time in Oman, so it really wasn’t enough, but I was so surprised at how much fun it was to explore this charming country! I am so glad that Sur Plaza Hotel was part of my trip to visit all the countries of the world.
