Learn about traveling to Cape Verde as we talk to Amateur Traveler Paulina about this island country off the African coast at paulinaontheroad.com.
Paulina says, “There’s actually a lot of debate about why you should visit Cape Verde. There are 10 islands in total, and although we cannot call each island a paradise in itself, it is a small universe because each island is very different from each other. So if you’re more of a hiker, outdoor lover, there are islands with amazing hiking trails.”
“If you’re more of an all-inclusive type traveler, preferring to stay in a hotel and not move from your sunbed, there’s an island for that too. If you prefer the unconventional and quiet and have no wifi connection, there’s an island for that too. If you are more interested in the city, life and culture, there are two islands for that too.”
“Depending on what you like to do on vacation, you can really choose an island as a destination. This is why so many people come back to Cape Verde, as each island of the 10 islands is so different.”
Paulina organizes a 7-10 day itinerary visiting the southern islands. It starts us in Praia on the island of Santiago. He suggests visiting music clubs and the Tarrafel concentration camp, and taking a tour of the island.
From there we head to São Filipe on the island of Fogo. Fogo island has an active volcano and visiting the volcano is a must. While there, visit the only winery in the country.
The 3rd island we visited is the green island of Brava, located in the interior of the island, with the capital Nova Sintra. It was moved from the coast during the days when pirates roamed the area.
The last island we visited is Maio. Maio has beautiful beaches but… at least for now… no big international brand hotels. Paulina was out of sight in Maio when the country shut down travel during Covid and even shut down travel between islands.
Find out why Paulina fell in love with these remote islands and why you might too.
