Travel to Hanoi and North Vietnam (Podcast)

Learn about traveling to northern Vietnam as the Amateur Traveler talks to Paul B. Kennedy about the country he has adopted as home from VietnamTravelWithUs.com.

Paul said, “This is very surprising. Very nice. After 15 minutes of being in Hanoi, I knew this was where I wanted to be. So if I can tell you what this place has to offer in 15 minutes, I can tell you right now that it’s definitely a place you should visit. It’s also one of the few places that is culturally rich and beautiful. The takeaway, the culture, and the things you can learn from it, I think, are beyond words.”

Paul lays out a one-week North Vietnam itinerary with a few optional extensions. He starts us off in Hanoi with a food tour to discover some of the street food in the area, followed by a Vespa tour of some of the main sites like the temples, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the Temple of Literature. History students may want to visit the Hỏa Lò Prison, which became the famous “Hanoi Hilton” during the Vietnam American War.

Then we drive to Sa Pa to see the rice terraces and ethnic villages north of Hanoi. Paul recommends avoiding the “scent train” and taking a special van to the area. It is important when you see this area. Come in the right season, the terraces will be in shades of green and yellow. If you arrive at the wrong time, they can burn after harvest as they burn the stubble.

Despite being very touristy, Paul recommends visiting the beautiful Hạ Long Bay. Get help from a tour agency choosing a boat, as the most suitable boats have a bad reputation. Then, head inland to see more limestone cliffs near Ninh Binh, at what the country calls Hạ Long Bay.

Finally, we head to the center of the country, to the colonial cities of Hội An and Da Nang. You’ll find beaches that are empty during the day but fill up after the sun goes down. Paul discourages us from getting in the car to see the Golden “Hand” Bridge near the Bà Nà Hills.

Find out why an expat from New York fell in love with Hanoi and northern Vietnam and see if you can too.
